Open Container Initiative (OCI) released the image format specification version 1.0 to standardize container platforms last July 2017. They aim to make container platform development vendor-neutral to allow compatibility across the hyper convergent environment that we live in today. It is a great idea since future development will have to rely on containers if we continue on the current path of mobile/IoT devices and cloud-based IaaS.
But what exactly is a container platform? Why is it called such? What does it do? and how does it benefit the real world? The article takes a basic but in-depth explanation on the subject of Container Platforms.
